Hair Treatments: A Complete Guide

When it comes to hair care, every person has different needs — excessive frizz, dry hair, rough hair — while people want to make their hair straight, smooth and manageable.

That is why there are different types of hair treatments. The purpose of every treatment is not the same.

I gained knowledge about hair treatments to improve the condition of hair and I understood that it is not enough to just see which treatment is in trend, the real thing is to know the current condition of your hair and the results you want.

In this article, I am sharing my experience and useful information about the common problems of hair treatment, their possible side effects and disadvantages and about hair care after treatment.

What does hair treatment mean?

Hair Treatment is a procedure which professionals use for a specific need of hair or scalp.

People use some treatments to make the hair shiny, smooth and manageable while some are used for hair fall etc. or any other issue.

Common Types of Hair Treatments

1. Keratin hair treatment

Keratin treatment is one of the common treatments that people use to make dry or frizzy, difficult to manage hair smoother and more manageable.

In this treatment, a professional applies a specific solution on the hair and then uses heat to set the hair.

After this, hair can feel smoother and shinier. This treatment can be good for people whose hair:

  • Becomes too frizzy
  • Feels rough
  • Tangles easily
  • Takes more time in styling
  • Wants to look smoother and more manageable

But there is one reason why keratin treatment does not give the same results on every person’s hair.

The natural texture of the hair and the previous chemical treatment and overall condition also affect the results.

2. Hair straightening

For hair straightening professionals use different chemical products, these products make the texture of hair straight.

I have also felt that before having hair straightening or other chemical treatment done, one should not think about the final results, health of hair is equally important.

If you repeat chemical treatments repeatedly or incorrectly, then the hair becomes dry and weak; therefore, before having the treatment, it is important to check how healthy your hair is already.

3. Hair color and Highlights

Hair color is also a big beauty treatment. Some people use hair color to cover grey hair, while some people try highlights & different shades to transform their looks.

But if the hair is lightened too much, then the need for stronger chemicals may increase and the risk of hair damage also increases.

My advice is that if you are going to color your hair for the first time, avoid a very dramatic change.

Go for a shade that is close to your natural hair color and first ask a professional to check the condition of your hair.

Treatments for hair fall

Hair fall is a separate issue and beauty treatments alone can not treat it.

Hair fall can be caused by factors including hormonal changes, genetics, nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, and habits that lead to hair loss.

Therefore, if you are experiencing more hair fall than usual, then it is better to find out the reason first rather than undergoing treatment for years.

What is hair transplant?

Hair transplant is a medical procedure in which healthy hair follicles are taken from the scalp and implanted in the area where there is hair loss.

It is not suitable for every type of hair loss, therefore, if you are thinking about hair transplant, it is better to consult a dermatologist or hair transplant specialist.

It is not advisable to choose a clinic just because of its low price. It is important to get information about the doctor’s qualification, experience, procedure, and results.

What was the best thing about hair treatment for me?

My biggest learning about hair treatment is that one should not spend money on just one treatment just by looking at its name.

A single treatment can give good results for some hair whereas the hair of other people may not get the same results, and the reason for this could be the treatment already done and a bad hair routine.

That’s why before treatment, I consider it more important to see what condition my hair is in at the moment and which treatment should be taken.

If the purpose is to reduce frizz or to make the hair smooth, then one treatment is good, whereas if the reason is hair fall, then it may need a different approach.

Hair care after hair treatment

After hair treatment, if you use too many chemical products in your hair, it can cause hair damage again.

It is useful to take care of these things after the treatment:

  • Use less unnecessary heat on hair
  • Heat protectant etc. should be used before straightening or curling
  • Do not tie your hair in a very tight ponytail or bun
  • Do not rub wet hair with a towel
  • Use conditioner
  • Avoid repeated chemical treatments
  • Gently detangle the hair
  • After swimming, rinse your hair with clean water
  • If there is irritation, redness, itching or swelling in the scalp, do not ignore it

FAQs

Damaged hair needs extra care before bleaching or lightening.

Yes, but limit heat use.

Should you get a treatment done just because it is trendy?

My last advice

Getting hair treatment done is not wrong if the right treatment is done in the right way and after that the hair is taken good care of. So it can help hair look beautiful and manageable.

If the issue is frizz & roughness, then salon treatment can be done, and if the condition of the hair is very bad — there is itching, swelling, etc. — then it is more important to consult a doctor first.

For me, the most important lesson in hair treatment is that instead of following trends, understand the needs of your hair and treat it. This approach is more practical and important for long-term hair health.
