When I saw the look of blurred lips for the first time, I found it quite different from normal lipstick. There was color on the lips but the outline looked blurred.
The color was more visible in the center, and the edges looked softly blurred.
At first I thought that perhaps the lipstick was not applied properly, but when I understood this makeup style, I realized that soft and diffused edges are the idea behind it.
Blurred lips are more visible in soft-focused makeup looks.
This softens the hard boundary of lipstick, making the lips appear less defined and more diffused.
What are blurred lips?
Blurred lips are a makeup technique in which we apply the lip color softly rather than creating a sharp outline.
The color is often most noticeable in the center of the lips and gradually softens towards the outer edges.
The purpose of this is not to show the perfect outline of the lipstick. The finish makes the color look soft on the lips. What I like best about this technique is that it reduces the pressure of maintaining a perfect lip line.
Even if the edges are not straight, that can be part of the overall look.
How are blurred lips different from normal lipstick?
Normally in lipstick, we usually apply liner or carefully applied lipstick to make the lipstick look defined. In blurred lip makeup the approach is a little different.
Normal lipstick
- Lip edge becomes clear and defined
- Color is usually applied evenly
- Many people use lip liner
- Finish looks more structured
Blurred lips
- Edges are soft and diffused
- Color may be more visible in the center
- Lip liner is optional
- The finish looks soft and effortless
How to keep lip edges soft?
The most important thing in blurred lips is to avoid very sharp edges. I prefer to start from the center instead of applying the lipstick in clear lines on the entire lip border.
After applying the color, I use a light tapping motion with my fingertip; this spreads the product gradually towards the outer area. I also use a small lip brush, especially if I go for a more controlled application.
If the natural lip line is very prominent, sometimes I apply a little concealer on the area outside the lips, but I do not use a full layer of concealer.
You can also use lip liner for a blurred look, but it is better to diffuse it softly instead of creating a sharp line.
Which lip products to use for blurred lips?
For this look, soft matte lipstick, velvet tint and lip color type formulas can be practical options. Blending them from the center outwards is relatively easy.
Very glossy formula is not my first choice for this look. It is possible to maintain a soft edge with a glassy texture, but it works fine with a matte or velvet texture.
While applying the product, consider the formula along with the current condition of the lips. If the lips feel dry, then it may be useful to blot the extra product by applying a light lip balm first.
Korean Style Blurred Lips
It has been seen in Korean Beauty for a long time. In Korean style blurred lips, usually the center or inner part is a little more pigmented and the color gradually softens towards the outer area.
For my style, rose pink, muted berry, soft mauve or warm nude shades can be good options. You can also try dark shades, but building them in layers gives a more controlled result.
How To Do Blurred Lips: Simple Steps
Step 1: Prep Lips
First of all, apply light lip balm to give a comfortable feel to the lips. If the balm is very creamy or slippery, then blot the extra product with a tissue before applying lipstick.
Step 2: Keep Lip Liner Optional
If you want a little definition, then a liner close to your natural lip color can do it instead of making a sharp outline; blend it with fingertips or a small brush.
Step 3: Apply Lip Color In Center
Apply lipstick to the center of the lips. Do not apply too much product in the beginning. It is easier to control the color with a thin layer.
Step 4: Blend The Color
If the center color looks light, then add a little more product there; this way the center can remain more noticeable and the edges soft.
Step 5: Final Check
Check your lips in the mirror from a different angle. If something is looking very sharp today, then lightly blur it with clean fingertips.
Common Blurred Lip Mistakes
- Applying too much product
- Sharp lip liner
- Applying lipstick on dry lips
- Rubbing color aggressively
- Thick layer of dark shade
- Too much product on the edges
FAQs

No, lip liner is optional.
Can blurred lips be done with glossy lipstick?
Yes, but creating a diffuse effect with a soft velvet formula is easier.
Which product is easy for beginners?
Starting with soft lipstick, a velvet formula can be convenient as the color can be gradually blended.
Which shades are suitable for blurred lips?
Rose, soft pink, berry, mauve and warm nude shades can be the starting options.
Are blurred lips for Korean makeup?
Korean beauty popularized the soft look, but the blurred lip technique can also be worn with different makeup looks.
Final Thoughts
The most interesting thing about blurred lips for me is that in this look the pressure of maintaining a perfectly sharp lip line is reduced. I apply the color in the center and softly blend at the edges.
If you like heavy lip liner or strongly outlined lips, then trying blurred lip makeup can be an interesting option. This look does not require a lot of products. A diffused lip look can be created by using a suitable lip color and blending a little.
