What Is a Lip Plumper?

If you have watched recent makeup videos, then it is possible that you must have heard the name of Lip Plumper. I also heard about it for the first time, so the question I had was: how is it different from other lip gloss or lip oil? Does it actually make the lips look fuller, or is it just another viral makeup product?

When I used Lip plumper, I understood that its concept is quite simple. It does not make the lips bigger permanently but is made to make them look more full and plump for some time.

To understand this better, I also read about different formulas and their ingredients, and today I am sharing my experience with you: what is Lip plumper? How does it work, what are its types, and what things should be kept in mind while using it?

What is a lip plumper?

Lip plumper is a cosmetic product used to temporarily make lips appear fuller, smoother and more defined.

It can come in different forms like

  • Lip plumping gloss
  • Lip plumping oil
  • Lip plumping serum
  • Lip plumping balm
  • Tinted lip plumper

This means that Lip plumper is not just a special product but can be found in different makeup and lip care formulas. The most interesting thing for me is that it is not made for pure color like lipstick; its purpose is to enhance the appearance of fullness.

How does it work?

Here I was most confused.

I thought that maybe the lip plumper increases the volume inside the lips but it is not so. But the effect of plumper is temporary.

Some lip plumping formulas contain ingredients that can cause temporary tingling, warmth or mild irritation in the lips. As a result of this reaction, the lips may temporarily appear swollen or puffy for some time. Some lip plumping formulas contain ingredients such as cinnamon, capsaicin.

On the other hand, some plumpers focus on hydration. When the lips are well moisturized and hydrated, they can appear smoother, which can make the lips feel more healthy and fuller, therefore, the sensation and result of every lip plumper is not the same.

Why does tingling occur when applying lip plumper?

This is the thing that surprised me a little for the first time.

After applying the lip plumper, a light tingling, warmth or cooling sensation can be felt, especially in those formulas that contain stimulating ingredients.

But one important thing is that more burning does not mean more plumping.

If severe irritation or an unusual reaction is felt on the lips, then it is not necessary to keep tolerating cosmetic products, it is important to read the ingredients and follow the product directions first.

Important Types

1. Plumping Gloss

This is probably the most popular type. It gives the same shine as a normal lip gloss but may also contain plumping ingredients. I find this type to be the easiest with makeup.

2. Plumping Lip Oil

If you like glossy and lightweight lip products then a formula with lip oil may be more appealing. The focus is usually on fuller looking lips along with shine and conditioning.

3. Plumping Balm

This can be a good option for people who prefer a balm like texture instead of a gloss. This type can be more moisturizing.

4. Plumping Serum

This is the new beauty trend. Serum type products are usually lightweight and focus on giving the lips a smooth and hydrated looking appearance.

5. Tinted Lip Plumper

This is one of my favorite categories because it provides color, shine and plumping effect in one product. If you do not want to apply lipstick and gloss separately, then tinted plumper can be a good option.

What is the difference between lip plumper and lip filler?

These two are completely different things.

Lip plumper is a cosmetic product which is applied on the lips and its effect is temporary.

Lip filler is a cosmetic injectable procedure in which filler is injected into the lips by a trained medical professional.

Therefore, it is not right to consider Lip Plumper as a replacement for Lip Filler.

After understanding this difference, the concept of Lip plumper became more clear to me because on social media both are sometimes discussed in the same way.

How long does the effect of lip plumper last?

It depends on the product and formula. The effect of lip plumper is not permanent. The effect of some products can remain noticeable for a few hours, while the result can be different from person to person, it is better to have realistic expectations.

It is not a product which will make the lips bigger forever by repeated application.

Can we use it daily?

I want to be a little careful here: the formula of every lip plumper is different, hence it is not suitable to use it with the same frequency for everyone.

If a product is giving only mild sensation and the label says it is suitable for regular use, then it can be done as per the directions, but if the lips feel dry, irritated or uncomfortable, then it is better to stop using it.

Cosmetic ingredients can trigger irritation or allergies in some people, so don’t ignore the reaction of your lips.

Some of my tips

The most useful thing I have learned about lip plumper is that it should not be rushed.

1. Read the ingredients:

Especially if you have sensitivity to any cosmetic ingredients.

2. Don’t apply too much product:

Applying more product does not necessarily mean better results.

3. Care with broken or irritated lips

If the lips are already very dry and cracked, applying plumping products can increase the cracks.

4. Keep away from eyes

Use lip products only on the areas for which they are made.

5. Don’t ignore the reactions

Light tingling and severe burning are not the same thing. If severe swelling or any other reaction occurs, stop using the product and consult a health care professional if necessary.
