Under Eye Patches: A Simple Routine

I was seeing under eye patches a lot of the time in beauty products and skincare routines. Small gel patches are applied under the eyes and are very interesting to look at.

Earlier, I was not able to understand whether it is just a skincare thing or it has some practical use in the routine.

When I tried them, the best thing I found was that it is very simple to do. It was not a replacement for my daily skincare, but it helped when I had to deal with the under eye area.

What are under eye patches?

Under eye patches are small skincare patches designed to be placed under the eyes. They often come in a gel or hydrogel texture and are soaked in a serum-like essence.

Some patches include hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, while some products also contain caffeine or botanical extracts.

That’s why I did not rely on the packaging or social media posts alone while buying the patches.

Also check the ingredients list and instructions of the product. I do not use just any skincare product near the inner eye area, and I find it more important to be careful.

Why I tried the patches?

My reason was that I wanted to add an extra step to my skincare routine for the under eye area.

Sometimes, I find this area tired-looking after a long day, so I needed some simple and quick skincare steps.

This is why these patches are interesting.

I also liked their soothing and refreshing properties. After applying the patch, I get time to properly focus on my skincare routine for a few minutes, but do not consider them to be any magical product.

For me, this is an additional step in my routine.

What ingredients to look for in under eye patches?

If your focus is on hydration, look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin.

Caffeine is a common ingredient in under eye skincare products. If a product contains caffeine or any botanical extract, I check the ingredients as well.

My tip is: do not purchase a product just because of words like, ‘fresh look‘ or ‘instant result‘; read the ingredient list and also see the instructions of the product.

How to use under eye patches?

I prefer to apply an under eye patch on clean skin. After face wash, dry the skin gently and then place the patch under the eyes.

Instead of placing the patch inside the eye or very close to the lash line, keep a little distance. If there is any instruction given on the packaging of the product regarding placement, it is better to follow it.

I don’t keep the patch on for longer than the recommended time given on the packaging. For me, it is not necessary to leave the product on for extra time.

After removing the patch, if there is any serum or essence left on the skin, just pat gently with your fingertips.

Under eye patches in the morning or at night?

This question was confusing me too.

You can use under eye patches both morning and night, but my personal preference is morning, especially when I want a fresh skincare routine.

If on any day you want to add an extra step in night skincare, then it can be done at night also; I look at the instructions of the product and my routine.

If you are going to apply make-up, it may be convenient to apply it before applying make-up. Just let the remaining residue on the skin get absorbed before applying make-up.

Are eye patches for dark circles?

Under eye patches are often associated with dark circles on social media.

For this reason, initially I also thought that maybe it was specifically for dark circles, but now I do not consider it as a permanent solution for dark circles.

The under eye appearance can be different from person to person, so I don’t expect the same results from any one skincare product.

Are the patches used for puffy eyes?

This is also a big question that I’ve seen in beauty content online.

Some eye patches contain ingredients like caffeine, while others contain different extracts or hydrating ingredients, so not every product has the same formula.

For me, doing the under eye patch in the morning is a refreshing skin step, especially when I want to make my routine a little relaxing.

I don’t do it as a permanent fix.

My tips for using under eye patches

From my experience all simple things are important:

  • Apply the patch on clean skin.
  • The patch should not be placed directly inside the eye or near the lash line.
  • Follow the recommended time given on the packaging.
  • Remove the patch carefully.
  • Do not rub the under eye area.
  • Test the new product on a limited area first.
  • Check the ingredient list.
  • Follow the product’s storage instructions.
  • Do not purchase the product just by looking at the viral packaging.
  • If burning or irritation occurs, remove the product.

I personally also feel that the eye patches should be considered an extra step in the skincare routine. It is not a replacement for the basic skincare steps like cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen.

Would I use under eye patches again?

Yes, I will use these occasionally. I like them best because they are simple, don’t take much time, and add an extra step to my skincare routine.

If you are thinking of buying under eye patches, then check your sleep first. If you want a hydration-focused product, then check the hydrating ingredients in the ingredient list. If you want to buy a patch with a specific ingredient, then read its formula and its instructions.

For me, the concept of under eye patches is simple.

Extra care, not a magic fix.
