Some time ago I noticed that the color of my neck was looking a little dark in comparison to the face. Then it used to look normal and fresh, but on the neck the skin looked dark and uneven. At first I thought that maybe this was happening because of dust, so I started cleaning it more.
But when it became clearly visible, I read a little more about this topic and watched some videos; then I understood that neck darkness is not always directly related to dust. The neck can become dark due to different reasons in different people, and it is not the same for every skin.
In this article, I am sharing my experience of why my neck started appearing dark, what changes I made in my daily care and how I keep my neck a part of my skin routine.
What is neck darkening?
Neck darkening simply means that the skin appears darker than other areas of the face or body. Sometimes it looks completely different and sometimes only some areas are more noticeable.
The most noticeable thing for me was that I used to do facial skincare regularly but almost ignored the neck. Cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen were applied on the face but often nothing was applied on the neck.
Why was my neck dark?
When I tried to understand this topic, I came to know that the dark appearance of the neck cannot be attributed to just one reason. Sun exposure, ignoring neck care, or sweat can be some of the factors.
In my case, a simple habit was that I used to keep sunscreen and skincare products on my face. Sometimes a tight collar, jewellery or certain fabrics can also be uncomfortable, hence I avoid unnecessary rubbing.
I also understood that it is not necessary to use exactly the same products after seeing someone else’s routine; the response to the skin may be different for every person.
Daily care of the neck
I didn’t complicate my care. I thought it was easier to focus on basic and gentle care instead of using so many products.
1. Clean the neck gently
While washing my face, I also clean my neck. I wet my neck, apply cleanser softly and then wash with water. There is no need for hard rubbing to keep it clean.
2. Apply moisturizer on neck
Earlier moisturizer was only a face product for me. Now I also include neck in my routine. If the skin becomes dry or tight after washing, then I apply simple moisturizer on it. While choosing the product, I give priority to the comfort of my skin.
3. Apply sunscreen on neck
This was an important thing in my routine. Now I apply sunscreen not only on my face but also on my neck. If the neck is exposed, I apply sunscreen on the front and sides as well.
What do I do to brighten my neck?
My first mistake was that I thought of scrubbing my neck again and again for quick results.
Later, I simplified my approach. I do not rub the neck with hard scrubs. Lemon, baking soda and random kitchen remedies also do not help.
There are many tips on home remedies on social media, but I do not follow every viral tip.
What may look good in someone else’s experience is not necessarily suitable for my skin.
It’s easier for me to follow simple habits like daily cleansing, moisturizer and sunscreen.
What do I do to avoid neck darkening?
I keep my skin clean. I apply sunscreen on the exposed skin and avoid unnecessary rubbing.
If the collar of my clothes keeps rubbing again and again, I prefer comfortable clothes.
After sweating, I clean my skin thoroughly but do not wash or scrub it again and again.
The most important thing was that I no longer consider it an extra part of skincare and do it along with face care.
If the neck remains dark?
I also understand that skin tone can naturally vary from person to person, so dark looking areas should not be explained by dirt or poor cleaning.
If there is a sudden change in the color of the neck, a change in the skin, or the concern persists, then it is better to take advice from a dermatologist.
My simple neck care routine
In the morning, I clean the neck thoroughly with face wash. After that, I apply moisturizer and sunscreen on the neck along with my face.
At night, while doing face wash, I clean the neck and if needed, then I apply moisturizer. I avoid hard scrubbing or random home remedies.
