Blackheads are one of those small things seen on the skin which I used to find quite confusing, especially seeing small black dots on the nose and chin, I used to think that maybe the skin was not cleaned properly but after understanding a little about skincare, it is not right to relate blackheads only to dirt.
By making some simple changes in my skin routine, I have realized that it would be more useful to understand the reason for the blackheads rather than removing them again and again.
In this article, I will share in simple words what blackheads are, how they are formed, the reasons why they can appear, the simple ways to manage them and which habits can be focused on to reduce their appearance in the future.
What are blackheads?
Blackheads appear like small black dots on the skin. These are noticeable on areas like the nose, chin and forehead, but the location can be different. The blackhead is actually an open clogged pore and when the oil, dead skin and buildup get accumulated, then it becomes a blackhead.
If this pore is open on the surface of the skin, then the material present in it may appear dark after coming in contact with air.
I also used to think after seeing the black dot that it needs to be cleaned more but harsh cleansing or scrubbing is not a simple solution.
How are blackheads formed?
Understanding the process of formation of blackheads is actually quite simple.
Our skin naturally produces oil, which is called sebum. The skin regularly sheds its dead cells. Sometimes oil and dead skin cells together clog the pore.
If the clogged pore is open and its material is exposed on the surface then it can be directly visible. We call this appearance a blackhead.
Where are blackheads most visible?
I have noticed that blackheads are most noticeable around the nose area and can be easily seen on the chin also. Some people may also have blackheads on the forehead or other areas of the face. Every person’s skin and oil production is different, so it does not depend on location.
Another thing that confused me earlier is the sebaceous filament. It is not necessary to understand every small dot as a blackhead. The sebaceous filament is a natural part of the skin and plays a role in bringing the oil inside the pores to the surface.
So there is no need to squeeze every dot.
Why do blackheads form?
There is not just one reason for blackheads. Factors like oil production, dead skin cells and pore blockage can play a role in it.
1. Extra Oil
The skin actually produces oil. If there is a lot of oil in any area, there may be a chance of oil buildup in pores, which is why the blackheads may be more noticeable on the nose and other oily areas.
2. Dead Skin Cells
The skin constantly sheds dead cells. When these dead cells mix with oil, this can cause blackheads.
3. Heavy Skincare & Makeup Products
Some products are personally heavy for me. Not every product suits every skin. If the product is not suitable for the skin then the issue of clogged pores can be noticeable, hence I check the response of my skin instead of just watching the trends.
4. Not removing makeup properly
Properly cleaning the skin after makeup is an important part of my routine. I prefer to use a gentle cleanser after removing makeup.
5. Touching the face repeatedly
We keep touching the face a lot without noticing. Repeatedly touching the nose or pressing the blackheads can irritate the skin.
How to remove blackheads?
To manage blackheads, I find a simple and consistent routine more practical. Squeezing them every time is not my preference.
Gentle Cleansing
First of all, gentle cleansing is important. While doing this, use cleanser gently instead of aggressively rubbing.
Salicylic Acid
The name Salicylic Acid is heard on the topic of blackheads. It is commonly used in pore clog management routines.
If I add an active ingredient to my routine, I don’t start too many new products at the same time. I introduce one product into the routine first and see the response on the skin.
Clay Mask
Clay masks are also included in the skin routine, especially when the skin is oily. I personally prefer doing it occasionally. The same product does not suit every skin in the same way, so it is useful to see the response of the skin.
Don’t squeeze blackheads
This is probably the most difficult tip, especially when the blackheads are clearly visible on the nose. But do not squeeze them, this repetitive pressing can irritate the skin.
I prefer to continue my normal skin routine. If the blackheads bother repeatedly and are not being managed with the normal skincare routine, then one option is to seek advice from a skincare professional.
Final Thoughts
For me, simple cleansing, suitable skincare products and consistency are a more practical approach. I prefer a gentle routine instead of squeezing them or harsh rubbing.
Most importantly, every skin is different, so if something gives good results on one person’s skin, it does not mean it will necessarily suit another’s.
