Dark Circles: Causes & Simple Care

Dark circles are something which I have been noticing for a long time. Sometimes the inner area used to feel a little dark, and sometimes after less sleep this darkness becomes more noticeable.

Earlier I used to think that the main reason for dark circles is just lack of sleep, but now when I understood this topic a little, I came to know that dark circles have different causes.

Why do dark circles form?

First of all, I found it important to understand why dark circles are noticeable. It is not necessary to have the same reason for every person; sometimes more than one factor can play a role.

1. Sleep routine

When my routine was disturbed, my under-eye area looked darker & tired. After lack of sleep, the face may look tired all over and its effect may be noticeable on under-eyes also.

That’s why I stopped ignoring my sleep timing. I don’t expect a good night’s sleep to completely make dark circles disappear, but proper rest can make my overall appearance feel better.

2. Genetics

In some people, dark circles are naturally common in the family. If the under-eyes of the family members are naturally dark then completely changing their appearance with just a skincare routine is not a realistic expectation.

After understanding this point, I stopped considering dark circles as just a skincare problem.

3. Sun exposure

It is easy to ignore the under-eye area while applying sunscreen on the face. Earlier, I did not pay much attention to this area.

Now sun protection is a part of my morning routine. I find sunscreen to be very harsh on my eyes. I am careful while applying the product. Sunglasses are also a simple part of my routine during outdoor time.

4. Rubbing eyes

I was not aware earlier that rubbing the eyes repeatedly is not a good habit; the under-eye area is delicate, and repeated rubbing can cause irritation, and darkness can become more noticeable.

5. Dehydration

When I ignore water throughout the day, my skin can look overall dull and tired, so I have made hydration a normal part of my daily routine.

I do not consider hydration to be the solution for dark circles. Drinking water is the only thing I do to ensure that I do not completely ignore fluids throughout the day.

What do I do to make dark circles less noticeable?

I have not made my routine complicated. The most useful thing for me is to follow some simple habits regularly.

Keeping sleep better

First of all, I tried to improve my sleep timing. Earlier, my sleep used to get disturbed due to late night routine and the next morning my under-eyes looked tired.

Now I try to keep my sleep routine as regular as possible. I do not consider dark circles as the result of sleep alone, but proper rest is an important part of my routine.

Do not rub under-eye area

While removing makeup, do not rub the under-eye area. Use a cotton pad and cleanser, and keep gentle movements while doing it.

This is not a complicated skincare routine.

Hydration

I have made water a simple priority in my routine. This does not mean that I drink extra water only because of dark circles.

I just do not completely ignore hydration. For me, it is a normal part of my overall daily routine along with skincare.

Cold compress sometimes

When my under-eye area feels tired or puffy, I find a cold compress refreshing.

I don’t consider it a permanent solution for dark circles.

For me, it is just a temporary step when the inner area looks tired or puffy. I keep the cold compress simple and do not apply extreme cold directly on the skin.

Can dark circles be cured with just eye cream?

I never had any expectation that cream would completely remove my dark circles.

The appearance of dark circles may be due to different reasons, hence the experience of skincare products may also be different.

I stick to a simple formula and check the product’s instructions first. Trying trending skincare ingredients near the under-eye area blindly is not a useful approach for me. A better option is to follow the directions of a product that is specifically made for the under-eye area.

Why should you be careful with viral home remedies?

There are many DIY ideas for dark circles going viral on social media. After watching some videos, it seems that the problem can be solved with simple kitchen ingredients.

However, I don’t try every viral remedy.

The under-eye area is sensitive, so I don’t use products with special ingredients or unknown mixtures which are not designed for the under-eye.

My simple routine with dark circles

My routine is basically this simple:

Morning:

Face Cleanse → Lightweight Skincare → Sunscreen → Outdoors Sunglasses

Day:

Stay Hydrated → Avoid Rubbing Eyes → Reapply Sunscreen As Directed

Night:

Removing makeup properly → Taking gentle skincare → Maintaining sleep routine

I keep my routine simple because consistency is easier for me than using a lot of products.

Can dark circles be completely removed?

The answer is different for everyone. If dark circles are noticeable due to genetics, natural pigmentation or eye structure, then it is not necessary that simple skincare changes their appearance completely.

A better approach for me is to focus on things that can make realistic improvements in my daily routine: sleep, sun protection, hydration, gentle skincare and not rubbing eyes.

I can also apply make-up to hide dark circles, especially when I want a fresh look, but make-up and skincare are two different things for me.

Make-up can be done temporarily while the focus of my daily routine is on simple care.

If there is a sudden unusual change in the under-eye area, one-sided swelling, or a concern that does not seem related to the normal routine, then it is better to seek a health care professional’s advice rather than relying only on skincare.
